December 2017 — School workers triumph. Michigan politicians sought to balance the state budget, and fund retiree health insurance benefits, by illegally cutting pay 3 percent from education workers. A hard-fought, eight-year court fight brought victory and a $554 million refund to 275,000 AFT and MEA members. Cross union solidarity at work!

December 2017 — Kazakhstan miners strike. Over 600 coal miners in Kazakhstan went on strike for five days over wages and safety. Their refusal to leave the worksite won a 30 percent pay increase, a huge jump, but short of the double pay workers were demanding. This bold action closed eight mines in a country where unions and strikes are legally prohibited.

December 2017 — Chilean auto union wins. After six months of tense negotiations, auto workers at Cormecanica Renault Chile went on strike for 15 days. Workers held mass demonstrations in front of the gates of several plants. In the end, Union No. 1 members won a 4 percent pay raise and a $2,000 end-of-dispute bonus from the Renault corporation.
