Chalk one up for the caravan! Trump tried to vilify them. His racist and nationalist rants during the midterm election were unceasing. He scuffled with military brass over deploying troops to stop the “invaders.” But Trump’s bigotry has, in many ways, increased support in Mexico and the United States for the thousands of caravanistas.

Mexican supporters of the migrants pressured outgoing President Peña Nieto to forsake his normal use of force. From Chiapas to Mexico City, Mexicanos are providing food and shelter. From neighborhood groups to unions and non-profit organizations, all pitched in. Their government was embarrassed into offering assistance.

Trump is not so readily shamed. He sent over 7,000 soldiers to the border between Mexico and Arizona and Texas. Armed troops are rolling barbed wire to block the refugees. Native Americans and many others have rallied in opposition to this gross militarization.

Halt! U.S. troops should not be at the Mexican border. It is an absurd waste of money and resources. Send them to assist desperate families suffering in hurricane and fire-ravaged areas.

Stop immigrant bashing. Central America has already suffered a century of U.S. military, financial, and political abuse by Empire USA. End the madness. Open the borders! Immigrants welcome here!
