Democrats trade women’s abortion rights

Democrats too conniving for principled politics and too bought-off by the insurance and pharmaceutical industry have relegated women to the status of a poker chip. In return for a handful of votes, they slithered from compromise to outright betrayal of women’s access to abortion in the recently passed House bill on healthcare reform.

At the eleventh hour, hard right Republicans and shady fundamentalists in the Christian right, with powerful support from U.S. Catholic bishops, pulled a fast one in Congress. Michigan Democrat Rep. Bart Stupak attached a ruinous amendment on abortion funding, and 64 Democrats and all Republicans voted for it. Twenty of those Democrats are supposedly “pro-choice.”

The House bill establishes a national exchange of healthcare insurance plans from which the majority of people will choose. But Stupak’s amendment effectively bans any plans in the exchange from offering abortion coverage! This means that unless a woman is rich and can find a private plan outside the exchange, she has no recourse for an unplanned pregnancy.

Women are outraged at the Democrats for letting the religious right get away with this, and are mobilizing to stop a similar ban in the Senate. This may just be the straw that ignites a renewed and radicalized women’s movement.
