Between September 2010 and May 2011, 24 Midwest and Los Angeles antiwar, labor, and international solidarity organizers were raided, questioned, harassed, and some face grand jury subpoenas. If they refuse to testify, they can be imprisoned for up to 18 months. For more information, check out www.stopfbi.net.

The only defense against such intrusive government forays is to exercise your right to refuse to talk to the FBI or police, and to organize with others to fight back. Two excellent downloadable pamphlets are “You Have the Right to Remain Silent” and “If an Agent Knocks”.

In Washington state, the Freeway Hall Case victory in 1992 showed how organizations can defend their First Amendment privacy rights. The Freedom Socialist Party refused to hand over minutes and financial records during a McCarthyite suit by a vengeful ex-member. FSP organized unions, civil rights and community organizations, and individuals to defend the right to hold minority views. The struggle is documented in a pamphlet available at Red Letter Press.
