Failing to de-fund Planned Parenthood at the federal level earlier this year, pro-life bigots have moved their battlegrounds to the states. In April alone, 33 anti-choice bills passed into law in nine states. Operation Rescue is already bragging about making Kansas an “abortion free” state. New laws there require costly and unnecessary remodeling to keep clinics licensed.

Anti-choice groups flooded state legislatures with 470 bills so far in 2011. Some bills would force women seeking an abortion to have ultrasound exams and listen to a doctor’s graphic description. Other proposals require police to investigate miscarriages as “prenatal murder.” Outrageous theatrics at legislative hearings include fetuses “testifying” via real-time ultrasound images projected on a screen!

Right-wing billboards tell Black women and Latinas that abortion is genocide, implying that women of color can’t handle the right to control their own bodies. SisterSong, a Black women’s group, has succeeded in getting Atlanta billboards removed. Similar campaigns are growing in Los Angeles and New York.

Massive “Trust Women” protests have thwarted passage of many anti-abortion bills, while injunctions have temporarily blocked laws in Kansas, Texas, and elsewhere.

A majority of the U.S. public supports a woman’s right to choose. This is a fight we must win!
