Successful union drives have recently swept through Southern Connecticut, defying vicious anti-union campaigns by giants like Hyatt, Hilton and Sheraton. Why? Because volunteer rank-and-file union members, not paid union staff, are doing the organizing.

UNITE HERE Local 217 relied on organized workers to lead these campaigns. They make home visits and meet weekly with potential members, and build trust with workers of similar backgrounds and languages, who do the same jobs.

Says a Hilton housekeeper, “Fellow unionists from the Hyatt helped. Then, Hyatt and Hilton workers organized at the Sheraton.” Hilton workers won by a 110 to 5 vote.
