How to screw up a pandemic response

The dubiously named Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is all mixed messages these days. Get tested, even though the lines are endless. Get vaccinated and wear masks, but don’t stop going out. By the way, quarantines are shortened from 10 to five days. Unless you’re an infected nurse; then keep working!

The chaos doesn’t stop with the CDC. Schools are in turmoil: open/closed, in-person/remote, student walkouts/teacher strikes. Parents cannot find, or afford, childcare.

Covid runs amok among prisoners and staff. The airlines want you to fly, no vaccinations or distancing required. Grocery shelves are bare, shipments months overdue. The Supreme Court reverses the Biden administration’s order that large employers require their workers to be vaccinated or regularly tested. Got to keep those profits rolling in!

And they certainly are. The world’s 10 richest men have more than doubled their wealth during the pandemic, to $1.5 trillion.

Hollywood couldn’t come up with a more agonizing plot for a horror movie. But this is a reality show instead — one that indicts a system too inhumane to be allowed to endure.
