Lovers of freedom and bodily autonomy rejoice! Kansans have once again beaten back anti-abortion attacks, showing reproductive rights defenders are ready and willing to battle — and defeat — the body-policing bullies who have crawled out of their recesses in recent years, emboldened by Trump’s anti-women rants.
Since the Kansas Supreme Court affirmed abortion as a constitutional right in 2019, pro-choice advocates have repeatedly repelled Republican lawmakers’ sordid fetus-fetishist agenda. In August, voters rejected a seemingly progressive initiative to elect judges. The measure was actually reactionary subterfuge to buy elections and put so-called “pro-life” stooges on the bench.
Activists saw through this right-wing fake out of “opening up the court” and went into organizing mode. They boldly educated that the ballot measure, backed by oil billionaire Charles Koch, was an underhanded attempt to go after bodily autonomy — again. And voters concurred.
This is a big win for the people of Kansas, and also those seeking reproductive care from neighboring Oklahoma and Texas, two states that have failed to serve their own populations by essentially outlawing abortion.
The takeaway is clear. There is real power in people organizing. Even in a post-Dobbs world, crucial liberties like reproductive freedom can be defended through vigilance and militant organizing!
