March 2020 — St. Paul teachers’ strike (cloudy). On March 10 educators and support staff in St. Paul, Minn., went out on strike. One demand of the St. Paul Federation of Educators is a mental health team in every school that would include psychologists, nurses and behavior intervention specialists. On March 13, a tentative agreement addressing some, but not all, concerns was reached.

March 2020 — Bangladesh: not giving up (cloudy). More than a year after their union was certified, management of the Netherlands-based Perfetti van Melle factory in Gazipur, Bangladesh still refuses to negotiate a contract. Workers have protested daily. Thugs with bats and wooden sticks were hired to intimidate the picketers but the workers refuse to back down. To support, go to www.iuf.org/.

February 2020 — Drivers vote for Teamsters (sunny). A unit of 53 Portland, Oregon, home grocery delivery workers at Safeway.com voted to join the Teamsters. The union got 62 percent of the vote despite some dirty tricks played by management, including a $2 an hour wage raise in the middle of the unionization campaign. The workers weren’t fooled. They took the raise and voted for the Teamsters anyway!
