October 2019 — Women reject GMO rice. In Bangladesh, the National Women Farmers and Workers’ Association began a campaign to stop the release of genetically-engineered Golden Rice. Marketed as a source of Vitamin A, the rice contains little beta-carotene and is a threat to bio-diversity. One demand is strict bio-safety laws.

November 2019 — Striking doctors fired. On Nov. 8, more than 200 Zimbabwean public-sector doctors were fired. The physicians had been on strike for over two months. The dismissals are part of a nation-wide crackdown against public workers who are angry over lousy pay that doesn’t keep up with rising inflation.

October 2019 — Unions walk out in France. A coalition of electrical and mining worker unions held country-wide work stoppages and protests against privatizing parts of the government-run energy giant Electricité de France. Workers have threatened a second national strike to halt renewable energy generation sales on the stock market.
