January 2017 — Statewide UC strike. Teamsters Local 2010, which represents 14,000 University of California workers, staged a one-day strike at all 10 UC campuses and medical centers on Jan. 10. Union members picketed to demand a fair contract and increased wages.
January 2017 — Oil workers settle. After six years of frozen wages, the 5,000 members of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union were ready to strike, but Petrotrin, the state-owned oil company of Trinidad and Tobago, settled. Workers won a 5 percent wage hike but didn’t get their back pay.
Ongoing — Kazakhstan labor. In an egregious flouting of international law and human rights, on Jan. 4 a Kazakhstani economic court ordered the permanent closure of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Kazakhstan, an independent trade union body.
