Mumia Abu-Jamal’s vision at risk

This radical political prisoner needs help. According to Prison Radio News, “As of March, Mumia Abu-Jamal has not received critical treatment for diabetic retinopathy and aggressive glaucoma — two serious eye conditions that lead to irreversible blindness.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PA DOC) must get Abu-Jamal to a specialist, immediately. Every day that passes increases the risk that he will permanently lose his vision.

Please contact PA DOC Secretary Dr. Laurel Harry at 717-728-2573, ra-crpadocsecretary@pa.gov and demand Abu-Jamal receive vision-saving care.

AMAZON WORKERS

Clever organizers

I really appreciated Jordana Sardo’s article “Pregnant Amazon workers expose warehouse abuses” [Vol. 47, No. 1].

I am aware in general of Amazon’s abuses in their warehouses, but this specific aspect was fascinating to learn about. I was horrified to hear of the hospital board member who also chairs the committee that oversees Amazon warehouse working conditions.

The worker-organizers were clever to find out this info and target her. And your including this article reflects FSP’s commitment to being genuinely feminist, which I love.

GENERAL STRIKE

Workers have the power

Thanks for your article on preparing for a general strike [“Town hall builds support for a general strike,” Vol. 47, No.1]. Striking is our strongest weapon in the fight against fascism and capitalism. We can’t vote our way out of a dictatorship. We can’t outgun the world’s largest military, the world’s most heavily militarized police force, and the world’s largest secret police.

Your article also helps us overcome societal ignorance about the history of general strikes in the U.S., that of Black labor during the Civil War, the five-day general strike in Seattle in 1919, and more.

For a long while, no one believed humans could run a mile in under four minutes. Once the first person did, the psychological block keeping others back dissolved, and more runners found they could beat the time. We need to know the history of striking so we can use that power again.

Workers in Minneapolis just showed us we can hold a one-day general strike. Your article helps us prepare to expand that strike because fascism and Christian nationalism won’t stop on their own. Workers can bring down the regime.

FREEDOM SOCIALIST

Excellent commentary

I just got my second issue of your paper and enjoy reading it and sharing it with other like-minded folks.

In particular I enjoyed Steve Strauss’ commentary: “Judaism, Zionism: How I unraveled the mess I was taught,” [Vol. 47, No. 1]. Well done, Mr. Strauss.

Thanks for your publication.

In a small town

Thank you Lois Danks for your article “The FS is key to small town organizing,” [Vol. 46, No. 6]. I totally agree with your perspective.

Small cities are important because local organizing can serve as a model for bigger cities. Public comment made at Naperville City Council meetings can reach residents in the local paper and on public television.

With each new issue of the Freedom Socialist, I consider how to use it at city council hearings, meetings and local events, and where to distribute it, like local bookstores. It’s important to get the analysis out!
