Prairieland defendants deserve justice!
In March, a federal court in Fort Worth, Texas, convicted nine anti-ICE protesters with domestic terrorism charges. The prosecution claims without evidence that the defendants coordinated an attack on police during a noise demo at Prairieland Detention Center. This trial marks an attempt to persecute and chill opposition to an increasingly authoritarian regime.

SOCIALISM
Tone down to be heard
Jared Houston understands that we can’t intimidate folks to vote for our side [“Socialism at the polls: the limits of electoralism” Vol. 46, No. 2].
Many associate the word “socialism” with 1950s scary “communism.”
By presenting individual initiatives, we can lure mainstreamers to hear our proposals. Less strident equals approachable.

Sewer socialists not the answer then or now
I lived in Milwaukee when there was a sewer socialist mayor. The sewers were clean; the breweries were union, as were industrial plants. But the cops still wore large, black boots and drove around throughout the city in American Motor Company cars. The John Birch Society had a lot of influence and I was investigated by the FBI at their request.
I don’t recall the sewer socialist mayor Frank Zeidler doing anything about the poverty in the Beer City. He smiled, made promises, and got elected. But the terrible housing and oppression of workers, Black and white, continued.
After Zeidler, other politicians came in, made promises, got elected, nothing changed. It took me a long time to realize we need revolutionary change. I wish I could have read Houston’s article in 1958.

OPPRESSING WOMEN
The right has a plan
Since being handed a copy late last fall, I read every word of my Freedom Socialist newspaper the day I get it. It fills in gaps of missing news or nuance from independent podcasts I follow.
However, in the April–May edition I was disappointed not to see mention of the January 2026 Heritage Foundation’s 250-year plan to oppress women and girls.
It spells out their method to push women into younger and younger marriages of one-man-one-woman. Uneducated women stuck at home pregnant without contraception and without a job while men claim the vacated work positions. Wives without no-fault divorce so they can’t easily leave abusive spouses. Decimated sex ed and pregnancy prevention programs in high school that keep youth from learning to be independent and escape rigid sex roles and oppression.
What we don’t know will hurt us!

14TH AMENDMENT
In-depth analysis please
I really appreciate seeing a prompt response to yet another Republican challenge to the 14th Amendment [“Editorial: Defend birthright citizenship,” Vol. 46, No. 2].
However, I do feel that the topic of birthright citizenship challenges warrants a larger analysis. Since so many aspects of the present U.S. Republic reference the 14th Amendment, conservative’s challenge of it holds many opportunities for them.
The editorial does reference some of the 14th Amendment’s history, but an intersectional socialist analysis of the development of the 14th Amendment, along with the impacts of its adjustment or removal, would be really advantageous.
