It’s high time for equal rights for queer and trans people! Federal bills protecting them have been introduced in all but one session of Congress since 1974. More than 75% of U.S. residents, including a majority of Republicans, support the Equality Act, which adds sexual orientation and gender identity to anti-bias law.

Given the emboldened right wing, this bill is needed more than ever. It’s essential for transgender people, especially the kids so cruelly under attack across the country (see story on page 5). The same goes for LGBTQ+ people of color, poor people and rural dwellers.

Passage of the Equality Act was a Biden campaign promise. The House endorsed it in February, with three Republican votes, no less. But it’s given little chance to pass in the Senate. So far, one Democrat and all Republicans are hold outs.

Equal rights defenders need to call on the Democrats to take their own platform seriously and fight for it. No more using the filibuster as an alibi for letting vital bills die!
