The roar of 40,000 voices reverberated outside an Athens court when members of the fascist party Golden Dawn (GD) were convicted of murder and other crimes. It was a long-awaited victory for anti-fascist Greeks. During the 2008 economic crisis, Golden Dawn polled 21% of the vote. Now it is out of parliament and is a convicted criminal gang.

In October, Golden Dawn thugs were finally held responsible for the 2013 murder of anti-racist rapper Pavlos Fyssas. GD goons also committed vicious physical attacks on migrants, communists, trade unionists, and queers.

Anti-fascist protests exploded when officials did nothing. Trotskyist-led KEERFA, Movement Against Racism and Fascism, formed a united front with the Pakistani Community of Greece, the Union of Immigrant Workers, and more to take the far-right brutes to court. That and unions striking forced Greek prosecutors to act.

The five-year trial unmasked Golden Dawn’s fascism and exposed government collusion with the neo-Nazis. GD was booted out of office.

KEERFA stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, with workers and refugees everywhere, and sets an example for us all. We can unite with labor and other justice loving folks to build a mass movement strong enough to stop fascists.
