A global refugee crisis confronts the United States as people displaced by war, famine and climate disaster desperately seek asylum. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to extend Title 42, ignoring their own rules and majority public opinion, further inflames this dire situation.
Trump-era Title 42 was sold as a public health policy designed to combat Covid 19 before vaccines were available. Its real use has been to deport nearly every immigrant seeking sanctuary.
The U.S. immigration system is racist, unjust and broken. While Biden gives lip service to more “humane” policies, his actions contradict his words. He has let in far fewer migrants than Trump.
Furthermore, Biden dictates most refugees apply for asylum from their home countries or somewhere other than on U.S. soil, an unrealistic demand for those fleeing for their lives.
The U.S. must stop treating the refugee crisis as a border problem. It’s a humanitarian crisis.
