Radicalize, reuse, recycle

A paper airplane made out of a Freedom Socialist newspaper sails against a backdrop of fluffly clouds and blue sky.

The Freedom Socialist brings readers the news you need to know in three different media formats. The online edition is increasingly popular and audio CDs/files are vital for sight-impaired readers and handy for long distance commuters. But most subscribers sign up for the good old classic — paper.

The myriad reasons paper news is important were covered in a prior Intelligence Report. However, as an eco-socialist publication we want to let you in on more ways to use the print edition through reusing, upcycling and recycling.

Naturally you should reuse by passing it on to friends, neighbors, union mates, etc. Or leave it at coffee houses, laundromats, or little free libraries. Even using it to shade your face while sunbathing (with the front page visible to beachgoers) spreads our news.

Now for some more mundane ways to make the most use of those trees that were sacrificed for the cause. At the very least you can place the FS in a recycle bin or line your bird or hedgehog cage. But other uses could be making fire starters, plant starter pots, drawer liners, gift wrap, paper sun hats, origami crafts or crumpling for gift-packing material (to educate the recipient).

But let’s get more creative!

How about upcycling into papier mâché masks or effigies for marches or rallies? Clipping headlines and photos for collage art on signs? Or filing clippings of a topic we cover as fodder for an essay or speech you’re planning? Even scrapbooking stories on victories for an inspiration journal.

Going to a rally? Roll an old FS into a cone for a megaphone or into a log for a self-defense tool against fascists.

Whatever you do with your paper copy of the Freedom Socialist, first read it, think about the issues and share it! Then let us know what you think. And if you have more ideas for upcycling or distributing the FS please let us know!
