As yet another war for profit was launched early this year, with Ukraine the target of Putin’s Russia, the Freedom Socialist knew at once whose side its was on — the side of the working class, in Ukraine and in Russia. As one reader commented about our analysis: “It’s crucial for more people to understand the imperialist roots of not only the crisis in the Ukraine, but the general mega-messes the world finds itself in!”
FS supporters like that reader have boosted the May-July $100,000 Freedom Socialist Fund Drive to a kick-ass start. At its launch, an online celebration of May Day honoring socialist and working-class resistance to war, participants pledged over $3,000. The international working-class holiday also saw a team in Melbourne raise dollars by providing marchers with tasty snacks — one of numerous fundraising activities to be on the lookout for during the campaign.
The FS is an invaluable asset for workers and the oppressed, reporting on world events from their point of view, letting them speak in their own voices, and telling of their struggles and hard-won victories. This issue’s cover story on the fight to defend reproductive rights is a notable example.
The Freedom Socialist can be this “tribune of the people” because it is part of the scant 10% of U.S. news outlets not owned by the six media conglomerates that control the rest.
Given our insistence on writing about taxing the rich and nationalizing key industries under workers’ control, we are very sure that the likes of Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg will not be handing us any grants. Nor do we think it’s likely that Mr. Bezos and Mr. Musk will stop comparing the size of their rockets long enough to contribute to our fiercely feminist, anti-racist, and anti-corporate newspaper.
That means we need your help. We have been reaching out via phone, text, email, and social media platforms to ask folks to make a gift, large or small, to the Voice of Revolutionary Feminism, and the response has been heartening. If you haven’t had the chance to donate yet, you can do so online or mail a check to Freedom Socialist, 5018 Rainier Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98118.
Help keep the Freedom Socialist going, so that one happy day we can print capitalism’s obituary!
