Fort Hood has a dirty secret. The base has the highest incidence of sexual harassment, rape and murder in the Army. And the brass has been covering it up for years.
It’s all out in the open now, thanks to the dogged determination of one soldier’s family.
SPC. Vanessa Guillén’s family feared the worst when she missed her regular call back home, and they demanded an investigation. Hitting a stone wall, they organized weekly protests in front of Fort Hood that won local and national news coverage.
It was only after volunteers found Guillén’s remains that the army looked for, and found, the killer. Only then did the military admit the full scope of the problem.
According to The New York Times, since 2016 more soldiers assigned to Fort Hood have died by homicide than killed in action. It’s an appalling statistic.
Too many of the dead are those who spoke up against sexual harassment and assault. And too many were women and people of color.
Despite who fills the ranks, military culture is still racist, misogynistic and homophobic to the core. Guillén’s mother told the press, “if my daughter isn’t returned, this fort closes!” We agree. Shut it down. Shut them all down, starting with Fort Hood!
