The workers above are picketing their plant, the Tesoro oil refinery in Anacortes, Wash., on Valentines Day. They are members of United Steelworkers, which launched a national strike on Feb. 1, 2015, over severe safety problems across the industry. Other issues were maintaining benefits and stopping outsourcing of routine maintenance.

Some of these picketers remembered the day that a plant explosion killed seven of their co-workers in 2010. They described relentless forced overtime, including long shifts for weeks with no break, that leads to unsafe levels of fatigue. A national agreement has been reached that union leaders say “calls for an immediate review of staffing.” But pickets continue until satisfactory local contracts are ratified by members.
