When Jovenal Moïse was assassinated on July 9, he had been ruling Haiti by decree for over a year. Regardless of who killed him, calling on the U.S. to “help” is a recipe for disaster for the people of Haiti.
Over the decades, multinational corporations have looted this island nation’s rich natural resources and brutally exploited Haitian workers. In the U.S., Democrats are as guilty as Republicans. Bill Clinton’s neoliberal “reforms” destroyed local agriculture, forcing Haitians to buy costly U. S.-grown rice. Barack Obama covered up a cholera epidemic caused by U.N. so-called peacekeeping forces.
The Clinton Foundation raised billions to rebuild Haiti after the devastating earthquake in 2010. But Haitians have seen little of these dollars — in terms of jobs, infrastructure, or any other meaningful assistance. Meanwhile, the Clintons and their investment bankers get richer and richer.
Haiti has been a beacon to oppressed people. Haitian slaves threw off their masters and established the world’s first Black republic. Imperialist nations have tried to destroy it ever since. Hands off Haiti. End all U.S. interference now!
