Since the Taliban took Kabul, the plight of women and girls has become dire. The Spontaneous Movement of Afghan Women holds the United States government responsible for the horrific treatment of all females under this new version of the old regime. The United Nations agrees — as do we.

A June 2023 unpublished U.N. report states, “In the Doha agreement (2020) that paved the way for the return of the Taliban to power, there is not a single mention of women’s rights.” That’s right, Trump’s White House, and later Biden’s, completely ignored the issue. Half the population wasn’t worthy of a single word of consideration. They threw Afghan women under the bus.

This paved the way for the Taliban to deprive “women of the right to education, work, and participation in social and political life,” the report states. Peaceful demonstrations are brutally suppressed by the Taliban, who “beat the protesting women and [subject] them to sexual violence and torture.” Many are abducted and imprisoned. Who knows how many have died.

Uncle Sam made this mess. The least the U.S. can do is provide refuge to all Afghan asylum seekers. And give women autonomy over their bodies and lives.
