Campaigners for women’s reproductive rights are gearing up for a day of protest on October 9. A young woman from Cairns and her partner face charges for procuring an abortion under Queensland’s 19th century criminal code. The trial date has been set down for October 12. A National Day of Action (NDA) will be marked by solidarity rallies around the country, demanding that all charges against the couple be dropped.
The Freedom Socialist Party is pleased to be among the endorsers for the NDA, which is the initiative of three organisations: the Pro-Choice Action Collective in Brisbane, the Women’s Abortion Action Campaign in Sydney and Radical Women (RW) in Melbourne.
The Victorian protest will take place on the second anniversary of the passage of laws, which removed abortion from the Crimes Act. The Right to Life is organising a “March for the Babies” on that date, as part of a campaign to recriminalise abortion.
Together with our sister organisation, Radical Women, we call on all pro-choice activists to rally on October 9 at noon on the steps of State Parliament. The action will demand that abortion be kept legal in Victoria and that the charges against the Cairns couple be dropped. We link these demands to other factors that would make choice for women truly attainable: childcare, health services, housing, education and training, jobs, equal pay, unrestricted access to contraception and an end to all forms of discrimination.
Mark your diary now! Organising meetings will be at 6.30 pm on alternate Thursdays, starting August 5. Get involved! Help make the rally huge, diverse and powerful! We hope to see you at Solidarity Salon, 580 Sydney Road, Brunswick. If you can’t make it in person, you can send a donation. Please send cheques to Radical Women, PO Box 308, Brunswick Vic 3056. We are the majority — let’s hit the streets in force!
