Poem: Redfern

I wrote this poem soon after TJ Hickey died and share it today in solidarity with Gail Hickey and the extended Hickey family.

Thomas Hickey died last night
Leading to the spontaneous mobilization
Of people to defend themselves
Against enforced marginalisation on the ‘ Block’ ;
Exchanging the role of the quarry
For that of the hunter – that instinct
For slaves to massacre their masters.

Violence has changed its direction
The native creates himself
And it binds them together
Like so many links in a chain.
Imagining ways of destroying the settler,
Dreaming of another Diem Bien Phu.
