The Kagarlitsky Solidarity Committee reports that the campaign to free Russian dissident and Marxist sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky, which the Freedom Socialist Party has supported, has scored a victory. They write:

“We’re very glad to be bringing you some wonderful news.

“The petition to free Boris Kagarlitsky which you signed on our website and the international campaign in which you took part have borne fruit – Boris has been freed!

“The Syktyvkar court has found Kagarlitsky guilty of ‘justifying terrorism’ (though of course Boris is innocent, courts in contemporary Russia almost never return a verdict in favor of the defense — that is the current practice). But instead of a guaranteed prison term of many years, the verdict is limited to a 10,000 euro fine. This is a unique case in Russia. Currently Boris is in Moscow and is returning to normal life. All this has become possible only thanks to the actions of thousands of people from all over the world who demanded the release of this famous left-wing intellectual. Our thanks to you all!

“The Kagarlitsky Solidarity Committee is going to continue its work. First of all, the prosecution is trying to appeal the verdict and fight for Boris’s imprisonment. Second, in Russia there are still hundreds of political prisoners, who must also be freed. We are therefore continuing to monitor Kagarlitsky’s fate and that of other Russian political prisoners and in case of necessity we will keep you informed.

“Solidarity is stronger than repression!”

Kagarlitsky has sent a message of gratitude to supporters which you can read here: freeboris.info/.
