Will the racist and sexist chant “send her back” replace “lock her up,” in reference to Hillary Clinton, as the new mantra of Donald Trump’s most rabid supporters? It’s too early to tell, but one thing is certain: Trump will run his reelection campaign on the same bigoted, redbaiting lines that he adopted the first time around.
The target of his venom at a July 17 campaign rally was Somalia-born Ilhan Omar, one of the most progressive members of the U.S. Congress as a supporter of women’s rights, justice for Palestinians, and more. She replied defiantly using Trump’s own medium, Twitter, with a stanza from a Maya Angelou poem:
“You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.”
One doesn’t have to be a Democrat to understand how important it is to defend Omar — and all the immigrants, refugees and people of color she represents in the eyes of the right wing — from vicious attacks by Trump and his followers. Look for rallies in her defense in your area and other ways to support her and the other subjects of the Trump administration’s xenophobia.
