From the moment three Israeli teens disappeared on June 12, the Israeli government declared the Palestinian organization Hamas guilty and launched a revenge campaign on the West Bank. Soldiers sealed off entire towns, arrested more than 800, invaded homes, killed several Palestinians, and incited rightwing anti-Arab mobs in the streets of East Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Hours after the bodies of the three teens were found on June 30, Israeli warplanes started bombing the Gaza strip, home to 1.9 million Palestinians. One brigade commander told his revved-up soldiers that their mission was to “wipe out” an “enemy who defames” God. Over the next two weeks, Israeli bombing raids killed 220 men, women and children, with the numbers increasing daily. Almost all were civilians. A Palestinian teenager from the West Bank was burned to death in a revenge killing and four children were killed on a Gaza beach. As the onslaught continues, hundreds of homes have been destroyed, 400,000 people are without electricity and 17,000 have fled to shelters. This carnage is the responsibility not only of the Israeli government but of the White House and Congress which regularly funds the Israeli state and has close ties with the military.

The power of Palestinian rocks and obsolete rockets pales against advanced Israeli air, sea and anti-missile weaponry. Although besieged by Israel’s death and destruction from the skies, Palestinians have risen up in outraged protest on the West Bank, in Gaza, and in Israel, where they are joined by progressive Jews. There have also been protests in many U.S. cities and around the world demanding that Israel end collective punishment of the Palestinian people.

But the criminal Israeli bombing continues. Why?

Israel plays a pivotal role for Western capitalists as a watchdog in the Middle East. Its job is to prevent revolution and keep this oil rich, strategic region safe for imperialist investors. The political support and foreign aid the U.S. gives apartheid Israel allows it to continue this role which involves ethnic cleansing—with total impunity. U.S. taxes fund foreign aid to Israel to the tune of $3 billion dollars a year. Much of this money returns to the enormous U.S. arms industry because the Zionist state’s police and military buy weaponry from U.S. producers. And so, the Israelis have free rein in Palestine.

For this reason, it is important to strengthen the Boycott, Divestment, Sanction movement against Israel and to educate about the economic interests at work behind the murderous Israeli/U.S alliance. In solidarity with the Palestinians, the U.S. public can pressure our government and Israeli leaders to end the carnage.

Stop the bombing now!
Cut off U.S. foreign aid to Israel!
End Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza!
Secure the Palestinians’ right of return to their homeland!
