A statement from the Committee for Revolutionary International Regroupment.
As the Committee for International Revolutionary Regroupment (CRIR), we call for international solidarity with the heroic uprising of our Bolivian brothers and sisters in support of their demands against the government’s austerity, sellout, and repressive policies.
For more than a month now, the rebellion, led by workers, peasants, and indigenous peoples, has continued to demand the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz Pereira and the cancellation of his anti-worker and anti-popular austerity measures.
In response to massive protests including roadblocks, picket lines, and strikes, the Paz government has now declared a state of emergency and ordered the intervention of the armed forces to crush the revolutionary mass movement, declaring this to be for “humanitarian reasons” and invoking “defense of democracy.” President Paz is accusing the people who are confronting these government policies—which benefit big capitalists and serve U.S. imperialism—of being vandals and terrorists.
Paz took office in November promising to resolve the country’s worst economic crisis in decades. To accomplish this, he imposed a brutal fuel price hike (gasolinazo), cuts to public spending, and a reform of the Land Law in favor of large landowners. He also declared that he would move forward with massive privatization projects which include handing over Bolivia’s natural resources to multinational corporations, as recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The Trump-aligned governments in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Honduras, Panama, and Costa Rica have all spoken out in support of the Bolivian government. They have endorsed the militarization of the country and the criminalization of social protest in the name of “social peace” and “constitutional order.” The Lula government in Brazil has joined this chorus of endorsement!
Once again, imperialism and the governments of the region demonstrate that bourgeois democracy functions as a façade for the dictatorship of big capital.
One day before the enactment of the state of emergency law approved by the senate and chamber of deputies (June 7), hooded men abducted five leaders of the Confederation of Bolivian Workers (COB) on a public street in broad daylight.
Following the suspension of democratic freedoms, the government published a list of thirty additional leaders who remain subject to arrest and preventative detention. At the same time, union, peasant, and indigenous organizations in Bolivia denounced the torture of those held by the government.
The U.S. under Trump is joining with other governments in the region to prop up the Rodrigo Paz government and keep it from falling due to the powerful protests. If this mass mobilization in Bolivia wins, it will call into question the policies of austerity and plunder in countries throughout our hemisphere. It will bolster the right of the working class and its allies to revolt against imperialist domination, capitalist exploitation, oppression, and hunger in the struggle to establish a system that guarantees a dignified life for the vast majority.
That is why solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Bolivia’s Altiplano is so urgent. We cannot support the popular-front opposition of Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) led by Evo Morales. MAS played a clear role in creating the conditions for the election of Rodrigo Paz at the end of 2025. In alliance with bourgeois governments over the last two decades, MAS has consistently betrayed the class interests of workers and peasants.
Today, the solution to the current crisis can only come about by direct struggle by workers, peasants and the oppressed in Bolivia.
• International solidarity with the struggle of the Bolivian people!
• Down with the state of emergency!
• Freedom for all detainees!
• Down with the government of Rodrigo Paz!
• For a government of the workers and peasant, indigenous, and popular organizations in the current struggle!
