75,000 Kaiser healthcare workers voted to strike because Kaiser management continues to put profits over them and their patients. Kaiser made $3.2 billion this year, yet understaffing and contracting out services keeps happening. Low wages and poor working conditions are forcing Kaiser employees to leave the healthcare industry.
The Freedom Socialist Party (FSP) has members who are Kaiser patients and we have been on numerous strike lines with Kaiser workers. We see firsthand the understaffing during our appointments. In one visit, a staff person was the desk clerk, the runner, and the lab technician! These working conditions are dangerous. Kaiser management is responsible for training and hiring more workers to keep up with patient care.
Does Kaiser’s corporate greed sound familiar? Are workers taking it? No! The bosses don’t create the wealth nor do they provide the healthcare in society, but workers do. Workers across all industries are recognizing their lives are valuable. They see the power of the screen writers strike, and now the auto workers strike. Kaiser frontline workers were there for us during the pandemic and now it’s time for all of us to be there for them!
FSP agrees with all of the SEIU-UHW contract demands and additionally calls to nationalize the entire healthcare industry under workers and community control.
