Hesham Elnakib, Ph.D. Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt 276 Mallorca Way San Francisco, CA 94123 Dear Dr. Hesham Elnakib, It is deeply disturbing that the Egyptian government is supporting Israel and the U.S. by building a wall designed to shut off tunnels that are lifelines for food, medicine and other necessities in Gaza. By helping Israel’s cruel military blockade, Egypt is helping to starve Palestinians. In doing this, the Egyptian government is opposed by many Egyptians. During a January 2010 press conference in Cairo, an Egyptian spokesperson for the Campaign to Stop the Wall of Shame was quoted as saying, “The Wall of Shame is the latest in a series of official measures undertaken by the Egyptian government to besiege Gaza. First, the Egyptians closed the Rafah crossing into Egypt; the Palestinians dug cross-border tunnels to ensure their basic survival. The Egyptian government then demolished many of those tunnels and inundated them with gas to kill the tunnel occupants — this is according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. The third development was the Egyptian government’s refusal to allow caravans carrying humanitarian supplies to pass through the Rafah crossing to Gaza.” I and the members of the Freedom Socialist Party support the Free Gaza March that gathered in Cairo in December 2009-January 2010 to break the Israeli siege that is destroying the lives, health and livelihood of the Palestinian community on the other side of the wall. My work with various communities to support Palestinian rights, including Arab and Jewish groups (I am Jewish), has shown me a rapidly developing movement embracing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, and fueled by outrage at the murderous siege and brutality of Israel. The U.S. is the main force allowing Israel to run roughshod over the Palestinians, but Israel and the U.S. could not be so successful if Egypt were not working with them.
We call on your government to stop building the Wall of Shame and instead offer help to the Palestinians who are suffering so terribly . Sincerely, Adrienne Weller Seattle Branch FSP Executive Committee
