Dear CTU sisters and brothers,
The Freedom Socialist Party (FSP) stands in solidarity with you and your union mates in SEIU Local 73. In 2012 the Chicago Teachers Union revitalized the labor movement by striking for needed changes. You brought together teachers, staff, parents, students and the community and showed the union movement how to win. The wave of teacher strikes, UAW’s battle against GM and the national hotel workers strikes are a continuation of the growing willingness of workers to strike and to hit the bosses in their wallets!
As socialist feminists, many of us work in public education as teachers, professors, paraprofessionals, and special education, maintenance, and office staff. We organize in our unions to fight hardest for those with the least. The FSP is a multi-racial and intergenerational party that recognizes the key leadership of people of color, particularly women of color, to unify labor and social justice movements.
Your fight is an inspiration to workers everywhere, and we are with you in this important battle to provide quality education that starts with smaller class sizes, better services for students, and an end to racial disparities in Chicago Public Schools. We applaud your struggle for fair compensation and good working conditions for staff, and your understanding that poverty is connected to a student’s learning conditions.
Freedom Socialist Party, U.S.A.
