Israel has once again escalated its brutal aggression against the Palestinian people of Gaza. Its assassination of Hamas leader Ahmed Jabari was a blatant provocation. Hamas struck back in a legitimate act of resistance. This was just the move Israel was waiting for. It has now called up tens of thousands of reservists, telling them the slaughter may last several weeks.
The US is supporting Israel’s crimes. Three billion dollars annually in US “aid” to Israel is paying for the weapons used in the murders. And Obama’s Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta gave Israel the go-ahead to kill as many Palestinian civilians as they wish when he said: “I understand the reasons Israel is doing what they’re doing. They’ve been the target of missiles coming in from Gaza…. Our hope is that in striking back that they can minimize the civilian deaths that are likely to occur.”
It is no secret that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is motivated by the votes he now stands to gain in the upcoming Israeli elections. He’ll also be able to demonstrate that with the re-election of Obama, Israelis can still count on US government support for a “security” plan that is based on denial of the rights of Palestinians.
More of the same will be the legacy of the Obama presidency.
To those who cynically demand that Hamas stop launching missiles against Israel, we ask: What then would you propose the Palestinians do to stop Israel’s intransigent suppression of their rights?
Hamas is no military match for nuclear-armed Israel, and a military solution to the Palestinians’ just struggle for freedom is impossible. The Palestinians need a worldwide political movement of solidarity that demands:
Stop Israeli Aggression Against Gaza!
Israel Out of the Occupied Territories!
End US Aid to the Egyptian Military!
US Hands Off Iran!
