Rally: Stop Aboriginal Deaths in Custody! Black Lives Matter! 30 years since the Royal Commission and there’s still no justice!
April 10 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm AEST
The RCIADIC made a total of 339 recommendations, with the key one being that imprisonment must be the last resort. State and federal governments claimed to accept the recommendations but did little, especially on the substantive questions. The imprisonment of Indigenous people of all genders, including children, continues to grow exponentially as late capitalism resorts to an ever more repressive law and order agenda.
We call for:
• full implementation of all 339 recommendations of the RCIADIC, particularly the demand that imprisonment must be the last resort;
• community control of the police through the establishment of independent bodies that are elected by, and accountable to, communities, are well funded and have real powers;
• funding for community services, including culturally appropriate health, education and training, housing and other programs by redirecting funds for policing and prisons and by taxing the big corporations.
We also advocate the importance of building a multi-racial movement. It should not be seen as the sole responsibility of Aboriginal people to take up this fight.
Now is a particularly important time to hit the streets. There have been four deaths in custody in the space of 16 days!!
This rally is has been called by Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance. Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party will be marching with the Indigenous Social Justice Association Melbourne contingent. Contact freedom.socialist.party@
