Los Angeles FSP is active in End Homelessness Now-LA, a broad-based community campaign that calls on City and County governments to transform all of their vacant and underused properties into permanent, supportive, public housing. Please join us on Facebook Live for an informative Town Hall.
Today, at least 70,000 people are unhoused in Los Angeles County, and many more are on the way, as unemployment rages, and protections against evictions evaporate. This catastrophe–compounded by COVID-19, devastating racism, and economic collapse–reveals the glaring flaws in our private, profit-driven housing system and exposes government’s lack of political will to do what is necessary to get people off the streets. Immediate bold and aggressive measures are needed to break bureaucratic logjams and create massive housing places and spaces outside of the private, for-profit marketplace.
The purpose of this event is to bring together housing, civil rights, labor, and community activists to map out a vision of what housing for all could look like and how we can work together to make it happen.
In this town hall, leaders in housing justice will:
• Describe the racist roots of the current housing crisis and why ending homelessness is a necessary step towards making Black lives matter in America;
• Analyze the implications of COVID-19 on the houseless and housing-insecure;
• Propose large-scale permanent solutions to bring people inside and keep others from losing their homes.
