Unions, international solidarity and the Western Sahara struggle

February 16, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm AEDT

Online meeting and discussion
Unions, international solidarity and the Western Sahara struggle

Western Sahara is Africa’s last colony. For decades, the Saharawi people have fought tenaciously to assert their sovereignty. Their struggle is similar to the East Timorese resistance. When Spain, the former colonial power, withdrew in 1975, neighbouring Morocco invaded. The Saharawi have been demanding self-determination ever since. The trade union movement has a proud history of standing with international struggles — from waterfront workers supporting Indonesian independence, to refusing to deal with apartheid South Africa, to supporting Palestinian aspirations by backing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

In honour of Western Sahara’s national day on 27 February, we’re pleased to host guest speaker, Ron Guy, Secretary of Australian Unions for Western Sahara who will explain what’s at stake and why unionists should take a stand. The discussion will be chaired by Alison Thorne who is a CPSU Workplace Delegate. Her introduction will champion international union solidarity.

Join the discussion online. Learn about Western Sahara and how unions are backing the Saharawi struggle. Share your ideas about how to grow working class solidarity for this and other freedom struggles.
