SAWANT FOR CONGRESS
Good analysis!
I just renewed my sub to the FS, on the strength of your analytical piece about Kshama Sawant’s Congressional campaign [“Kshama Sawant’s run for Congress,” Vol 47, No. 4]. It had bothered me that there had been no news in FS about Sawant’s run — though she is, in my estimation, the single best-known socialist (not social democrat) in the nation. So, I was relieved to see that you had not yielded to sectarianism, but instead had thoughtful, principled critiques to make — and still extend critical support to her effort. This impressed me, and I decided to continue being your reader for another year. Thank you!

MAMDANI
Leader of a labor party?
Here in NYC, there is good news coming out of City Hall every day. Support for tenants’ rights, expansion of childcare, affordable groceries, and free bus service are some of the things which make Mayor Mamdani extremely popular. I know your party defends the concept of a mass labor party. Wouldn’t comrades like Mamdani, who joined 15,000 striking nurses, represent exactly the kind of leadership needed for such a party? Thank you!
Philippe M., New York City
Editor’s response: As far as we know, Mamdani is not an advocate for a labor party, preferring to work within the Democratic Party to try to reform it. On the other hand, a mass labor party, to be effective for oppressed and exploited workers, requires class independence, meaning a real break with the twin parties of capitalism, both Democrat and Republican.
FIFA REJECTED
Montreal pushes back
FIFA courted Montreal as a potential host city for the 2026 World Cup. The terms would have canceled the International Jazz Festival and Grand Prix. Montreal showed FIFA the door.
