Planet or profit — the choice is clear

Fires are burning millions of acres and thousands of homes in California, Oregon and Washington state, creating unbreathable air. Triple-digit temperatures on the east and south coasts are producing epic floods and bigger hurricanes. This, just in the USA.

The ecologically essential Amazon rainforest and other tropical forests in South America, Africa and Asia are in flames. Worldwide deforestation is epidemic. About 93 percent of the planet’s increased heat is absorbed by oceans, with profound global effects, such as ruinous plagues of locusts in Eastern Africa and catastrophic firestorms in Australia.

Capitalism is the cause of climate change. It’s built on the insatiable need for constant growth. Corporations that buy and sell fossil fuels and clear-cut forests rake in humongous profit. They will not voluntarily limit their wealth and power. What’s needed is collaborative, worldwide solutions, which only socialism can provide.

This crisis must be solved globally. That’s why the ever-widening resistance is heartening, from indigenous peoples on every continent leading the struggle to restore nature, to the upsurge of youth climate protesters. At this point of no return, international solidarity and eco-socialism must forcefully take back Mother Earth from the voracious parasites.
