Volunteers are the lifeblood of this paper

The hardworking people who donate time and money are the vital essence of any grassroots organization. And it takes an army of them to keep an independent newspaper alive and kicking. An unknown author once said: “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”

Freedom Socialist (FS) volunteers do a slew of projects, large and small. They write and edit articles, proofread the paper, prep mailings, distribute the FS, assist on subscription drives and fundraising efforts, and donate money.

The current editorial staff is all volunteer, as is our Managing Editor. Many friends of both Radical Women (RW) and the Freedom Socialist Party (FSP) cheerfully give up days of their time each issue to help label and stuff envelopes.

Why do they do it, I asked? Jill B. believes that “volunteering for the FS allows me to be part of the push behind the frontlines.” So true! And Rachael B. says she gives freely of her time because, “I want to support the important work that the organization does. I greatly admire the people who belong to FSP and RW.”

Jeff S. recently got a sub and asked for more papers to distribute. I asked him why he decided to. He said, “While there are several working-class groups out there, the Freedom Socialist Party has some unique positions and a great newspaper, but in my area [the FSP] is unfortunately the best kept secret when it comes to politics. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to distribute the paper and in a small way help get the word out in Illinois to grow new subscriptions and interest in the FSP.”

Perhaps you have wanted to volunteer, but didn’t know how to get involved. Drop me a line at FSnews@socialism.com and we will figure out what works. Maybe you want to research a pressing topic, or write to a political prisoner. We have something for you to do, trust me. In a similar vein, if you are not a subscriber — become one! If you have something you want readers to know, write a letter to the editor. And we take no advertisements, so donations of any size are always appreciated!

In the end, the fight to create a better world needs all of us. So get in touch and join the fun!
